I haven’t seen the DVD, but I suspect by your wording that you are blaming the Bush administration for this disruption.
Since you used the word era after the name Bush, allows me to believe you are being less than honest as who is to blame for this.
All that aside, I would be most interested to see and hear more about this. I am a radical proponent of alternative energy research. Having run and operated a fleet of trucks in 1974, I lived the trauma of the first Arab embargo. I also saw the systematic destruction of energy entrepreneurs, who were either bought out or in some other way stymied in their attempts to develop alternative energy.
Never again, should we allow big business, sleazy politicians, or raghead oil merchants, to discourage or stop our research and development of alternative energy. This is the single most important issue today, of bringing back an economy that was second to none. Remember, we are half way home, by taking the first step !

GM was destroying electric cars that they had made recently?
I heard on The Colbert Report that GM had taken several hundred electric cars back from consumers/testers, and that GM was also crushing and destroying them at a GM plant in Arizona. Is this true, and why would GM do that when the environment is needing a bit of TLC?
This is the story told in the movie “Who Killed the Electric Car”. I recommend the movie highly.

The GM EV1 was the most advanced electric car ever sold, and everybody who drove the car fell in love with it. It had a range of 120 miles, was extremely reliable, accelerated and handled with a sports car feel, and burned electricity at a cost of only 1 to 2 cents per mile. Don’t trust the disinformation spread about the EV1 on the internet – listen only to the people who drove them. (I drive an electric car myself)

But GM had a problem – a choice to make. They could have invested in agressively promoting and advertising the car – or they could try to prove to California that nobody wanted the car, and thereby help kill the law that said thay had to make electric cars. From a corporate standpoint, the latter choice seemed a safer bet to them.

GM says they had to crush the cars, because to allow people to drive them, meant they had to keep spare parts for them. The reason this doesn’t make sense: Ford and Toyota let people buy and keep their electric cars made under the same California law.

Some people think the car was ‘too good’, and therefore embarrassing to GM’s case that there was no demand for the car. Others think that it’s just simple corporate shortsightedness, and the car was killed by executives who didn’t understand it.

But the EV1 lives on in its children. The designer of the amazing electric drive system of the EV1 started his own company. The same electric drive is now in the Tesla Roadster, an incredible all-electric sports car. This $80,000 car does 0-60 in four seconds, top speed 130 mph, 250 miles on a charge, and charges in a little over 3 hours.
