I think the Oil Switch you are talking about is an Oil Pressure switch mounted into the Engine Block which is located directly to where oil pressure is measured through the oil channels.
The so called oil pressure switch operates at around 15/20PSI (not sure but around there as different cars have different operational pressures) and its operation is, as soon as you switch your ignition switch on you will get an amber light come on, and as the engine is cranked over the oil pressure starts to build up, when it reaches around that pressure and surpasses, the amber light goes off or indicates pressure on oil pressure guage.
If the amber light ever comes on this is to alert the driver that there is some thing seriously going to go wrong with the engine if you do not switch the engine off immediately.
